B Pack Weasel and Cub Mascot
Third Kanata B Pack Banner

13 November, 2002

This Week: we focused on astronomy.  Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate so our activities were all conducted indoors.  We anticipate an outdoor session with a telescope in the spring time frame when we can review and practice some of the things we talked about. We discussed the solar system, its planets, asteroids, comets and meteors.  Cubs became a model of the solar system so they could see how it was spread out.  We passed out copies of a current star chart (good for the evening sky in November) and looked at the major constellations.  Finally, we discussed the old Greek stories behind the naming of the constellations - the original soap opera!  (Again, we reminded the Cubs of the massive Leonid meteor shower just before midnight 18 November - should be 5,000+ meteors per hour as the earth passes through the Tuttle comet orbit).

Badge Work: Cubs completed Astronomer Badge #4 and #3.  We discussed all of the other items in this badge as well but the Cubs should show how to do the items listed at night before they are signed off.  We are making up a register of all the badges that Cubs have earned from previous years so, when you can, please send Rakshaw (mikevdburg@rogers.com) an e-mail listing all of your Cub's badges earned to date so she can update our records.

Next Week: This will be a regular meeting focusing on Law awareness in the usual meeting place.

For those who will permit it, please sign the photo release form being posted on the website and bring it in to next week's meeting.  The group publicist would like to be able to take photos of members of 3rd Kanata Scout group throughout the year for newspaper and publicity purposes - to let the community know what local Scouting is about.  If you have concerns about this please let me know as well.

Yours in Scouting
