Letter to Parents
17 September 2001
Dear
Parents:
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the
2001/2002 Scouting Year. Whether you
are returning or this is your first time with us, the Leadership Team hopes
that you had an enjoyable summer period and that you are all rested up and
ready for another year of Scouting activities.
So far this year, our Leadership Team is
made up of four Leaders. The Weasel
Pack Leadership Team for 2001/2002 consists of:
Wayne Fontaine (AKELA) 591-9263 wayne.fontaine@sympatico.ca (home)
660.5458 wayne.fontaine@bell.ca (work)
Mark Tunnicliffe ( ) 599-8941 m.tunnicliffe@sympatico.ca
Helen Vandenburg ( ) 599-4145
Trevor
Weeden ( ) 591-8911 fweeden@farpointmarketing.com
Our Group Committee
chairperson for 3rd Kanata Bridlewood Scout Group is:
Garth
Jonah 592-4581 gjonah@magma.ca
Parents are asked to come into the
meeting location, in person, to drop off and pick up their Cubs at the
meeting. This will allow the Leaders to
speak with the parents, if required.
But more importantly, it will ensure that Cubs are safe and not left
unattended.
The weekly "dues" for Cubs of
the Weasel Pack is $0.50 (fifty cents).
The money collected as "dues" is used to purchase craft
supplies, refreshments and other items for use by the Cubs at our meetings and
outings.
Scouts Canada is a uniformed movement,
and we teach the boys to be proud of their uniforms. When in uniform, the Cubs are to be dressed in the uniform shirt,
Cub belt (yellow) and buckle, the Cub sash and the 3rd Kanata Group neckerchief
and navy blue pants. Although no hats
are worn with the uniform during regular meetings, etc, the Cubs are encouraged
to wear a wide-brimmed "Tilley" style hat or toque when
appropriate. They are to be dressed in
uniform for ALL Cub activities unless advised otherwise. It is also important that your Cubs have
proper footwear for our indoor activities.
If at all possible, it would be appreciated if they could wear running
shoes, preferably ones without black soles (we have noticed that the black
soled ones sometimes leave marks on the floor.
Cubs should be appropriately dressed to go outdoors at any time since
some of our activities during our regular meetings may be held outdoors.
The uniform is also your Cub's record of
service. They work hard to earn awards,
badges and stars. They want these sewed
on as soon as they earn them so they can show them off at the next meeting (and
earn bonus points for their Six during inspection).
The Sixers and the Leaders carry out the
Inspection at the beginning of the meeting.
It is at this time that each Cub turns in their "dues"
($0.50), is checked for dress, and whether or not they have brought their Cub
book, survival kit and other items that they may be required to bring. The Inspection activity is part of our
program that is used to reinforce the Cub’s sense of responsibility, the need
to keep their uniform and oneself clean and tidy. The final point about inspection is it offers time for the Six
Advisors and Sixers to interact with their Six.
Parents are invited to attend any Cub
meeting at any time. There will be some
events and meetings where we will need extra assistance, and we would
appreciate your support on these occasions to enable the programme to be
successful, but you do not need to wait to be asked to come to a meeting. We are planning to put "the outdoors" into our program
over the next few months. Please feel
free to join us on these excursions or activities as well.
This year our activities will be based on
the Purple Star and Red Star segments of the Cub program. There are far too many awards, badges and
stars available for us to be able to have them all covered during the normal
three-year program. From time to time
we send your Cub home with a sheet detailing what is needed to complete an
award, badge or star requirement. With
your help, your child can quickly finish and have yet another badge for you to
help sew on their sash. Remember, when
Cubs are working on a badge, they must work to the best of their ability. All Cubs work at different levels, and in no
way is this asking for perfection. If
they give it their best shot at the time and you feel that the Cub has met the
requirement, sign a note and send it back to the leaders. Your help in this is far more valuable to
the leaders and your Cub than you probably can imagine.
Our policy is to send home a permission
form for the majority of our off-site activities. This allows the Leadership Team to inform you of what is to
happen and when, while it also offers you the opportunity to provide us with updates
on medical situations, food allergies and emergency telephone numbers.
Thank you for your interest and your
commitment to both the Weasel Pack and the 3rd Kanata Scout Group. On behalf of the Weasel Pack Leadership
Team, we look forward to working with both you and your Cubs in the months
ahead.
Yours in Scouting,
Wayne Fontaine
