Next Week (4 March): we are doing a theme on
safety in sports as part of the Cub badge programme. To demonstrate safety
equipment, we are asking Cubs who have any, to bring in examples of sports
safety equipment they may have. Make sure it is marked with the Cub's
name so it won't get lost.
March break: there is no meeting on Monday,
March 11. We resume our regular meetings again on Monday, March 18,
2002.
A reminder of the winter hike this Sunday. See the
note on the website and dress for the weather (expected to be sloppy with
wet snow or rain).
Rink duty is over. Thanks to the parents who
came out. Due to the warm weather we only had one night at the rink. The
following note was received from the Group Rink coordinator:
- I just wanted to take a moment to thank
everyone who has worked so hard on the rink this winter. Please
forward this message on to parents who helped out in your "action
teams". I had the opportunity to meet, and in some cases work
with a number of them and I can honestly say they did so with
enthusiasm and energy.
- I do not want to say too much about the early
part of the season when we did not have a water source. However, from
the moment we had water we all worked hard to make a surface and
maintain it. I particularly liked the way that sections took
responsibility for their shifts and went out every evening they
could.
- In the end we had a pretty respectable rink
but as of this morning when I stopped by it was pretty much gone. We
cannot get around the basic laws of physics but we are already making
plans to get around the problems of working on asphalt next year. One
idea is to set up a rink nearby on the ball diamond - I think it could
work. We should also look at tying the rink and toboggan hill into the
various section programs and taking advantage of the many resources
available to us from the City, such as Carnival gear. We should also
look at the way we address the volunteer aspect of this project because
it is a significant continuation to the community and conversely to the
Group.
- I particularly want to thank Garth and Barry
for making it all happen. I look forward to the rest of the year and
to working with you next year.

Other opportunities for participation in fund
raising will be available in Spring. Besides the spring Scouttrees event
we will be running another garden waste bag sale as follows:
- Hazeldean Mall has confirmed that we may use
the Mall for our spring Fund Raising Event (sale of generic Yard Waste
Bags) on the following dates:
- Friday, April 12, 2002
from 6 - 9 PM
- Saturday, April 13, 2002
from 9 AM - 6 PM
- Friday, April 19, 2002
from 6 - 9 PM
- Saturday, April 20, 2002
from 9 AM - 6 PM
- Our tables will be located at the main entrance
to the Mall, adjacent to the record store and the pet
store.
Specific times for Weasel Pack will be announced later.
Finally, parents who participated in the Kub
Kar preparation and rally are asked to pass me their names so we can award
credit for programme participation in the Volunteer Bond register.
Yours in Scouting
