B Pack Weasel and Cub Mascot
Third Kanata B Pack Banner

28 October, 2002

This Week: we had two events. We held the autumn hike exploring the Old Quarry Trail. Unfortunately, with the number of folks we had, most of the wildlife kept their distance so we focused on the geological features and the plant life. Cubs collected a selection of leaves which we will identify at this week's meeting. The regular meeting covered compass and map work. We talked about the eight main points of the compass and how a magnetic compass works. We also learned how to use a city map to find streets and prominent buildings and how to give directions. We also used the compass in a simple orienteering exercise to find a "new planet".

Badge Work: For the Cubs attending the hike, the following items were completed: Observer Badge (#6), World Conservation Badge (#4), one of Green Star (#B1), Green Star (A5), Hiking Badge (#3, #4 and one of #6).

On our regular meeting last Monday Cubs completed Green Star (A8, B4), and Camping (5c).

During Badge Testing the following Cubs earned: Devon (Cooking), Michael (Red Star, Trail Craft, Hiking), Sebastien (Swimming), Eric V (Athlete, Language Strip, Trail Craft), Jason (Team Sports, Collector, Trail Craft), Philip (Trail Craft), Jeffrey (Trail Craft), Connor (Cooking), Kevin (Trail Craft, Recycling), Jonathan (Swimmer, Aboriginal Awareness, Musician, Trail Craft), Christopher (Trail Craft, Team play) and Peter T (Reader, Trail Craft). Any errors or omissions? All badges should be sewn onto the sashes by next meeting.

We are still settling into the routine for the year and some Cubs may have missed an opportunity to do their badge testing. We will do them this week. During Badge testing, a Cub should have his book with him and tell the tester which badges he has done, showing all the signed off items. The tester will then ask the Cub about the activities he has done. If you e-mail Have your Cubs prepared to discuss the badge work they have completed with a leader in their six. Let Rakshaw (mikevdburg@rogers.com) know before the meeting what badge(s) your cub will be completing, she will have them ready to go.

Finally, all cubs who had their Camp Kits complete for their Trail Craft badge also completed Green Star (A3). For those who have not, bring them in this week to complete their Trail Craft Badge. In the boxes we provided you should be able to get in all the items mentioned in pages 86-88 of the Cub book with the possible exception of tape (just include extra bandage strips). Once completed, keep your kit in a safe place - it can be a useful item for any family outing if you build it with care (and your Cub will need it for Scouts too).

Next Week: This will be a regular meeting focusing on Signals and Communication and tree identification. For those Cubs who went on the hike, bring in your leaf bags - we will work on identifying them in a craft. For those who did not, bring in any six TREE leaves from non-cultivated (i.e. no exotic) trees in your area.

Other Activities: It appears that 3rd Kanata Scouts will be participating in the Kanata Chamber of Commerce annual Holiday parade on 23 November. Watch for futher information. Cubs are encouraged to wear their uniforms to school on Remembrance Day 11 November if they feel comfortable doing so.
